Update log for www.jonrc.net

September 8, 2007

Some updates to the main page, stylesheets, and many of the first level pages to bring them up to using XHTML. I will likely be playing with things more as I poke around in the CSS.

Been awhile since I've logged anything here; but I have actually added some stuff to the photos section of the site. I've started putting into place some of the Japan photos as well as added a section for EOS 5d Photos. I will probably start placing photos up here more often in addition to putting them up for family members at Kodak Gallery.

Just moved the Constellation pictures page from here to the Picture Hub page -- nothing too serious.

Well, I think I got my problems with IE figured out involving the cookies, as well as the first run of the cookie implementation figured out. To start off, it will tell anyone new to the site that all of the pictures are new, but subsequent visits (after closing the browser) will fix that. If anyone has any problems with it, let me know.

Starting to setup some cookies ("*GASP*", "Evil", "Treachery", I hear you claim) on the website. Though, these are going to be nice cookies. They'll just be keeping track of when you last looked at pictures and then post "NEW" tags on pictures that you wouldn't have seen based on the date stored in the cookie when you last visited the website. There's only a partial implementation currently, where it sets a cookie claiming that your last visit was December 31st, 2003. This was for testing of the functionality and also so that I can figure out the syntax for setting expirations (other than when the browser quits) in the future. For those that are curious, the cookies are named lastvisit and currentlast. 'lastvisit' will eventually stick around forever and ever while 'currentlast' will be a current session only. 'lastvisit' will be used to set 'currentlast' when you first come to the Picture Hub. Maybe I'll get around to moving these cookies to encompass the whole website and mark the front links when they've been modified too (though that'll require some changes to the front page that I don't feel like making right now).

I also removed the images from the W3C links on the front, leaving the links in with the ALT text. This makes the front page load faster and not depend on any other server than its own.
